Since 1913, the obligation for employers to repair the consequences of work accidents suffered by their employees has been recognized in Portugal. Lack of insurance is punishable by law and may result in the payment of a fine. In the case of an accident involving an employee, the employer is responsible for paying the benefits provided for by law.
